“The Magnificent Seven” — Marlborough ride away with the points as battling Lilywhites fall short
Full – Time
Scorers: I Satchell 28′, R Donohue 57′
Calne Town hosted Marlborough in the Wiltshire Ladies Premier Division hoping to get back to winning ways, but instead it was a case of “The Magnificent Seven” as the visitors rode out of Beversbrook and into the sunset with a commanding 7–2 win against the Lilywhites — and all three points.
First half
Calne got off to the worst possible start after two minutes, a scramble in the penalty box putting the visitors 1–0 up. The Lilywhites upped their tempo, and Issy Satchell's shot was straight at the goalkeeper. Marlborough doubled their lead on 18 minutes from a long shot on the right-hand side, and almost got a third but for a good save by Sarah Saville.
The Lilywhites gave themselves a lifeline on 28 minutes as Satchell found the net after a good breakaway solo run, and Lexi Czerwionka thought she had equalised two minutes later, but her shot went agonisingly wide. Marlborough dealt Calne a hammer blow with two goals in six minutes at the end of the half to go into the break 4–1 up.
Second half
The Lilywhites started the second half brighter and got their reward on 57 minutes as Rhiann Donohue scored following a good breakaway move — and she almost got another two minutes later with a well-taken shot from the right-hand side.
After a good battling period from both teams, Marlborough scored three breakaway goals in nine minutes around the hour mark, Izzy and Emily both completing their hat-tricks in a finish that flattered the visitors. The Lilywhites stopped them adding to the score with resolute defending towards the end of the game.
