The Lilywhites opened pre-season with a 6–1 defeat away to FC Chippenham Ladies — a scoreline that tells you far less about the afternoon than the first half did.

First half

Calne started well before a harsh handball decision against Izzy Barbieri handed Chippenham a penalty, converted for 1–0. The response wobbled for a spell — too much forcing of the final ball while Chippenham went long for their runners — but Issy Satchell, deputising in goal, produced a string of fine saves to keep the game level-ish and the Lilywhites in it.

Then the moment of the half: a brilliant turn from Rhi, rolling her marker and beating the covering defender with a lovely piece of skill to go one-on-one, only for the shot to fly straight at the keeper. Not bad at all for a first game in four and a half years. Minutes later the training-ground work showed — a well-worked through ball from Abbie Pickett released Megg Haylor-Godwin, who rounded the keeper and slotted home. 1–1 at the break, and every reason to think there were more in it.

Second half

With Issy returning to her outfield role after the interval, Calne reverted to forcing the early ball for her to run onto — and the lack of a specialist keeper began to bite, Chippenham finding the net twice from range. In the final quarter the fitness gap told its own story: this was Calne's first pre-season outing against Chippenham's third, and as legs tired the hosts took full advantage.

The gaffer's verdict

“Disappointing — but it's minutes in legs.” Plenty to build on before the season opener at home to Salisbury on 6 September — and if you happen to be a goalkeeper reading this, we should talk.
